Rahul Deshpande on winning the National Film Award: Awards not important but it feels good

Singer-actor Rahul Deshpande’s first National Award is very special as it is for a film based on the life of his grandfather, Hindustani singer late Pandit Vasantrao Deshpande. He won the Best Playback Singer award for the film Me Vasantrao (2022).

“My grandfather was more known in the Marathi circle. Due to his upbringing in Pakistan, he also used to write Urdu. His style was different. I wanted to tell people how he lived. I am trying to spread his music. He was 47 when he came into the limelight and died at the age of 60. I have never seen such a versatile person and artist. I am glad that my first award is for a film on him,” says Deshpande.

The singer not only gave playback in the film but also played the role of his grandfather in the film. He admits without hesitation that he has not received many awards, but this national recognition makes him tickle pink. “They (the awards) are not important but it feels good. It’s great to be recognized. I have received some awards in my life, and I never thought of getting them. But it was not what I expected,” shares the 42-year-old.

The National Awards were announced on Saturday evening and “it’s busy” for the singer-actor ever since.

“It’s a ‘happy busy.’ I don’t go for interviews. I’m often reclusive and think about music. (But) I went there, only because I got an award and I wanted to enjoy it. I’m just enjoying the meditation,” He ends.
