The actress also opened up about how the gripping finale sets the ball rolling for Season 3 and that all is in store for Paul Rudd.
Edina Varsson, who plays Poppy aka Becky Butler in You Only Murder in the Building, is every employee. What attracted you to him?
Edina Verson: I love Poppy! She’s done some terrible things, but she’s not that bad either. She is very hardworking, very ambitious, smart and very sweet. I think we get to learn that when we meet Becky Butler. There’s a little wounded bird inside her and I think we can all relate to her and that inner child.
You are a new mother, congratulations. What is the important message for the women in this show?
Edina: I find it difficult that both this season and last season have killer women. I liked the part where the trio says ‘We didn’t kill Bunny Folger, but we might have been able to save him with kindness.’ I think it’s the same with Poppy. I think if Cinda had been nice to her, or if Mabel had reached out to her earlier, or if someone in Poppy’s past had been kind to her, she wouldn’t have ended up the way she did. I would like girls and women to take this to heart and realize that we lift each other up and that we can make the world a better place.
You share most of your screen time with Tina Fey and Selena Gomez, how was it working with both?
Edina: Tina is so amazing and so good at her job that she makes it so easy. She comes off so professionally but also so hot. I’m a new mom and it was my first job after having a baby, so leaving home to work on this show… I just wanted to talk about my baby and Tina was always up for it . So, we talked a lot about our kids. It was very generous to him. Selena is really sweet, she is very kind and easy going. There’s no drama, it’s just a very hot set. My favorite part about being on this show was how family-like it felt and how kind and warm the whole process was.
How many scenes have been improvised? Especially when you have tons of acting legends like Martin Short, Steve Martin and Tina Fey.
Edina: This is mostly by script, but Martin, Steve and Tina will alternate lines that the showrunners and writers will come and shoot. These were two separate lines which they would then decide which one was the funniest. It wasn’t so much about improvisation, but more about leaving your options open. His suggestions were really funny and great for watching these geniuses work on their jokes.
As a woman in Hollywood, Poppy is given a lot to do professionally. Would you say that it is still difficult for actresses in terms of pay disparity or is there anything else that you think could be improved?
Edina: Yes definitely! I come from a theater background, and I think in a theatre, the idea is that you have to pay your dues by working for free or becoming an intern and not be very well behaved. I think this is where Poppy is and I don’t think it’s necessary. Learning is important, but I don’t think you have to sacrifice yourself to learn. Like I said before, being a woman in Hollywood I think it’s important to lift each other up and support our fellow actors and to know that we all rise together.
Your character aka Becky Butler plays a big part in this series, especially when things take a surprising turn in episode 9. How does the finale get the ball rolling for the new season?
Edina: This sets it up really well for the next season. I’m so excited to see where this is going! It looks like it will trace Oliver’s life in the theater and hopefully Paul Rudd will be a big part of it. I’m just sad that I probably won’t be in it. But I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Poppy might be revealing.
