House of the Dragon began streaming on HBO Max on Sunday (and on Disney+ Hotstar in India). According to figures released by HBO, the show was watched by nearly 10 million people in the US on its first day itself. In four days this figure has increased to 20 million. In comparison, the most-watched episode of Game of Thrones was watched by 13 million people. This is the biggest opening for any HBO show in the company’s history.

Reports say that this historic success prompted HBO to flag off season two. According to a report in The Hollywood Reporter, HBO’s executive VP of programming, Francesca Orsi, said, “We are proud of what the entire House of the Dragons team has achieved with season one. Our phenomenal cast and crew faced a great challenge and exceeded all expectations, delivering a show that has already established itself as a TV star. Many thanks to George RR Martin, Ryan Kondal and Miguel Sapochnik for leading us on this journey. We couldn’t be more excited to bring the epic saga of House Targaryen to life with season two. ,

House of the Dragon is based on the book Fire and Blood by George R.R. Martin and adapted for TV showrunners Ryan Kondal and Miguel Sapochnik. Game of Thrones was based on Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series.

The series, set nearly two centuries before the events of Game of Thrones, looks at the fictional continent Westeros in the books of Martin, when it was ruled by the Targaryen dynasty. It focuses on the Dance of the Dragon Civil War within House Targaryen, which led to his eventual fall.
